On September 18, 2024, Leitat, WAITRO’s European Regional Focal Point, hosted an online workshop on Development Cooperation Capacity Building. The webinar was held to enhance understanding and participation in development cooperation. The event focused on exploring opportunities in regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa.
The interest in creating this workshop is due to the growing positioning of the development cooperations that research and technology organizations have experienced in recent years. WAITRO member organizations have the potential to address opportunities within this framework because WAITRO provides members with a global network of high-value potential partners for International Cooperation.
Leveraging WAITRO’s global network, participants engaged with experts and peers to delve into two specific reference cases. They learned how to approach triple impact opportunities and gained valuable insights from these experiences.

In the first part of the session, Juliana Ramírez Zuluaga from Leitat presented the concept and global ecosystems of Development Cooperation and their action mechanisms and the ecosystem composed by the key players on the sector.. Then, attendees explored some of the funding schemes in regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa, where it is possible to leverage WAITRO’s global network #GlobalInnovationFamily.
WAITRO members in Latin America also shared their approach toward international public procurement and reference cases of multi-country collaboration on projects under the Development Cooperation framework. Maria Eugenia Suarez, represented the Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia Industrial in Argentina (INTI) from Argentina, shared lessons learned from the project “ADELANTE 2”, a case of Triangular Cooperation, and Martha Liliana Marin, on behalf of the Centro de Ciencia y Tecnología de Antioquia (CTA) from Colombia, shared a case of joint formulation and execution of project called “CAPINBIO” under a partnership between Latin American and European organizations.
