Valuable Lessons on Global Collaboration for Innovation

The Capacity Development workshop “Commercialization of Research and Innovations” jointly organized by WAITRO and SIRIM took place from 29 April – 4 May 2019 at the Concorde Hotel Shah Alam in Malaysia.

In addition to raising awareness of the importance of commercialization, the aim of the event was to impart knowledge of Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Feasibility and Market Analysis Technology Valuation, and Business Plan Development.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Hairil Yahri Yaacob, Deputy Secretary General (Investment) at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia. Followed by Dr. Paul Burrows, Head of WAITRO Office China and Tan Sri Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, Chairman of SIRIM, YBhg Academician.

The trainer of the workshop, Semuel Ojonimi, gave valuable lectures on the following topics:

• Commercialization Model and Pathway
• Technology Readiness Level
• Feasibility and Market Study
• Technology Management
• Funding Landscape
• The Importance of Developing a Good Business Plan

The agenda also included a presentation of SAIRA – WAITRO’s Open Innovation Platform, interactive exercises and four pitch sessions.

Increasing Collaborations and Finding New Opportunities

The workshop attended 23 participants from 14 different countries. The attendees could learn how to increase collaborations in research programs and find new opportunities for future R&D and commercialization. The key takeaway was the topic of Global Collaboration for Innovation, which, according to the participants, must be created in every sector, with continuous effort towards promoting global collaboration from different parts of the world.

The Capacity Development workshop was a great opportunity to strengthen cooperation between WAITRO members, as well as contributing to the Sustainable Development Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
