Round Table on Intellectual Property: Vaccines and Patents

A spotlight on equitable access to medicines during a global health crisis and thereafter.

 

WAITRO, the Africa Europe Innovation Partnership (AEIP), the Research Fairness Initiative (RFI) and the North-West University (NWU) join hands to explore the role and impact of intellectual property protection on access to vaccines and biologics.

The Round Table on Intellectual Property: Vaccines and Patents takes place on June 30. It aims to shine a spotlight on the interconnected multiplicity of factors impacting equitable access to medicines during a global health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Potentially, taking these learnings into future situations.

These crucial factors include:

  • Intellectual property protection regimes
  • Licensing options
  • Technology transfer considerations
  • Manufacturing capabilities and capacity
  • Regulatory approvals processes

The round table is part of the AEIP Final Event. It will be opened by the WAITRO president, HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan and moderated by Thyra de Jong, Public policy Principal evaluator and Health Specialist, Technopolis Group.

The agenda will include an opening event by the WAITRO President HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan and short presentations from the experts:

  • AndrĂ© J MarĂ©, IP Director ENSafrica, specialized in Commercial and Transactional IP Matters
  • Pascale Boulet, IP & Access Leader at DNDi (Drugs for Neglected Initiative)
  • Fatima Hassan, Health and Human Rights Lawyer and Founder of the Health Justice Initiative
  • Hans Georg Bartels, Senior Program Officer at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization)

The invited experts will engage in a panel discussion, which will be followed by an open Q&A session with the online audience.
