The WAITRO Capacity Development “Waste to Wealth: Utilization of Locally Available Renewable Energy for Economic Growth” was organized by WAITRO, ICESCO and UIRI. This workshop took place in Kampala, Uganda from December 14-16, 2015.

Turning Waste into Energy

One of the major challenges of developing countries, such as Uganda, is the poor solid waste management. Despite willingness of community participation, lack of knowledge needs to be correctly addressed.

Waste can be used as a form of energy. Implementing the right techniques to turn waste into energy offers a great advantage, not only to reduce or eliminate waste but also to enable the value of products and materials. It could lead to enable circular economy.

Waste into wealth

This Capacity Development was successfully held. The participants had the opportunity to learn techniques to turn paper waste into briquettes and biodegradable bags. This workshop contributed to three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

7. Affordable and Clean Energy
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
15. Life on Land
